Ensemble Orthopedics Announces 1700 Implantations Since Introducing the Ensemble CMC™ Pyrocarbon Joint Replacement
AUSTIN, TX — August 3, 2026: Ensemble Orthopedics are proud to announce surpassing 1700 implantations since the introduction of the interpositional Ensemble CMC™ pyrocarbon arthroplasty. In March 2021, Henry T. Leis, MD of Bienville Orthopaedic Specialists implanted the first Ensemble CMC™ at Memorial Hospital–Gulf South Surgery Center. “This technology provides a promising alternative to the more invasive procedures that are available to treat osteoarthritis of the CMC,” Dr. Leis said then. He has since implanted more than 185 devices.
The Ensemble CMC™ was designed to treat a broader range of patients using a minimally-invasive surgical technique that offers potential for shorter recovery times as well as improvement in pain and joint function. In contrast to a traditional ligament reconstruction and tendon interposition (LRTI) procedure, the Ensemble CMC™ preserves anatomy by replacing only the damaged bearing surfaces of the trapezium and metacarpal bones. Its stemless, anatomical design allows the device to be inserted through a small incision that saves bone and retains critical, stabilizing soft tissues.
“We are entering an exciting time for innovative solutions for CMC arthritis. More arthroplasty players are entering the field. Patients expect better long-term options than fusion or LRTI surgery, and many of our surgeon users are finding the Ensemble CMC to be their first choice of surgical treatment for earlier stage disease,” said William Ogilvie, President and CEO of Ensemble. ”Our
five-year survivorship data show less than 5% revision rate with 650+ patients beyond two years postoperatively. In addition, over 110 of the 1700 procedures were performed for patients who requested a second implant in their opposing thumb.”
Ensemble Orthopedics, a medical device company based in Austin, Texas, develops proprietary, interpositional implants designed to employ minimally invasive surgical techniques in the treatment of osteoarthritis in the hand and wrist. For further information, visit https://www.ensembleortho.com/
