Total Joint Orthopedics Secures Growth Financing to Accelerate Commercial Expansion and Product Innovation

SALT LAKE CITY [October 21, 2026] Total Joint Orthopedics, Inc. (TJO), a medical device company built to simplify joint replacement, today announced that it has secured growth financing through a debt financing facility of up to $11 million. The new capital gives TJO the resources to accelerate a series of growth initiatives over the coming months, including expanded implant inventory and instrument sets, broader sales channel coverage, and continued investment in its next-generation implant pipeline.

The financing concludes a comprehensive capital-raising campaign in which TJO’s management team and board of directors evaluated the full range of alternatives, including equity investment, strategic partnership opportunities, and debt financing. Having concluded that debt offered the most efficient path to fund its growth while preserving its ownership structure and long-term flexibility, TJO ran a selection process among prospective lenders and ultimately expanded its banking relationship with Wells Fargo.

“TJO’s approach has always started in the operating room,” said Christopher E. Pelt, MD, Professor of Orthopaedics, University of Utah. “Fewer instrument trays, a streamlined workflow, and an implant design backed by long-term clinical data lets my team focus on the patient instead of the setup. TJO’s investment in advancing porous and revision Aurum designs means that more patients, including those with metal sensitivities, will have access to a bearing surface without the deliberate addition of common metal sensitizers, and they’ll get there through one of the most efficient surgical workflows in the industry.”

Accelerating Growth Initiatives

TJO intends to deploy the financing across several priorities:

  • Inventory and instrument expansion. Increasing implant inventory and instrument sets to support new and existing surgeon customers in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs).

  • Sales channel expansion. Building on the KPI-driven commercial structure to add and strengthen distribution partners in targeted markets.

  • Next-generation Aurum® Technology. Advancing porous and revision Aurum® designs, furthering TJO’s multi-year plan to eliminate the use of cobalt chrome in orthopedic implants. Aurum® offers a revolutionary ballistically bonded titanium nitride (TiN) surface to provide a premium implant without the deliberate addition of common metal sensitizers such as nickel, cobalt, and chromium.

  • Hip portfolio expansion. Continuing development of a next-generation hip stem to complement the Platform® Hip System Portfolio.

  • Advanced manufacturing. Expanding the use of additive manufacturing with supply partners to shorten lead times and strengthen supply chain resilience.

Building on Clinical and Commercial Momentum

TJO enters this next phase with a strong clinical and commercial foundation. The company has surpassed 55,000 implants placed nationwide, including more than 42,000 Klassic® Knee implants, and 32% of its 2026 procedures year-to-date were performed in ASCs. Its Klassic® Knee System is supported by 12-year survivorship data and features a modern universal femoral design that enables single-tray primary and three-tray revision workflows with Klassic ONE® instrumentation.

“Throughout my career, I have tried to solve the problems surgeons face every day, from developing the Natural-Knee in 1985 to fundamentally changing how knee arthroplasty is performed,” said Aaron Hofmann, MD, Co-Founder and Chairman of Total Joint Orthopedics. “TJO is the culmination of that work. We delivered a high-performing modern universal femoral component in 2013 that I believe can change the industry, and this financing lets us put it in the hands of many more surgeons and the patients they serve.”

“This financing marks a turning point for TJO,” said Erin Hofmann, Chief Executive Officer of Total Joint Orthopedics. “We weighed every option and chose the structure that best serves our surgeons, our team, and our shareholders. With capital in place, we are moving quickly to put more implants and instrument sets in the field, expand our distribution network, and advance the technologies that define Efficiency by Design®.”

TJO plans to share additional updates on its growth initiatives in the coming months. Next up, the company will exhibit at the AAHKS 2026 Annual Meeting, November 5–8, in Grapevine, Texas.

Why This Matters

Two Perspectives

MBA Lens: Economic and industry impact

Total Joint Orthopedics secured $11 million in debt financing to accelerate commercial expansion and product innovation, strategically preserving ownership while funding growth. This capital infusion supports inventory, sales channel, and next-generation implant development, leveraging its Efficiency by Design® platform. The move aligns with the increasing shift of total joint arthroplasty into ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) and value-driven care models.

  • The financing will expand implant inventory and instrument sets, supporting new and existing customers in hospitals and ASCs, and strengthen distribution partners in targeted markets.
  • TJO's strategy emphasizes streamlined workflows and reduced instrumentation (max three trays per procedure), addressing economic realities and improving turnover efficiency in modern joint care.

PhD Lens: Clinical and outcomes impact

Total Joint Orthopedics secured growth financing to advance its next-generation implant pipeline, focusing on porous and revision Aurum® designs. This technology aims to eliminate cobalt chrome, offering a premium implant surface without common metal sensitizers. The Klassic® Knee System, supported by 12-year survivorship data, exemplifies TJO's commitment to long-term clinical performance and simplified surgical workflows.

  • Aurum® technology utilizes a ballistically bonded titanium nitride (TiN) surface, providing an implant free from deliberately added nickel, cobalt, and chromium, addressing metal sensitivities.
  • The Klassic® Knee System's universal femoral design enables single-tray primary and three-tray revision workflows, enhancing surgical efficiency and reducing sterilization burden.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
