Global Orthopedic Leader, C. Lowry Barnes, M.D. Takes UAMS Helm

If there’s one thing orthopedic surgeons appreciate, it’s a leader who’s actually scrubbed in, argued over implant choice, and survived more than one early-morning OR start.

And C. Lowry Barnes, M.D., the newly selected chancellor of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences — is just such a medical science mentor, colleague and leader.

Fellowship-trained, board-certified joint replacement surgeon, Dr. Barnes somehow still finds time to publish (more than 350 peer-reviewed papers, but who’s counting) and steps into the role after serving as interim chancellor since July.

The University of Arkansas Board of Trustees approved the appointment following a national search, taking President Jay B. Silveria’s recommendation during a specially called meeting that managed to be both virtual and in person — a fitting hybrid moment for modern academic medicine.

For anyone who’s spent time around University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences orthopedics, Barnes needs little introduction. He joined University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 2014 as professor and chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and later became the founding director of The Orthopaedic and Spine Hospital at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

If you’ve walked through The Orthopaedic and Spine Hospital at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences since it opened in 2023, you’ve seen firsthand what happens when surgeons are allowed to design a hospital around workflow, outcomes, and patient experience — instead of the other way around.

President Silveria summed it up best, noting that Barnes’ career has earned him deep respect both in Arkansas and nationally.

Dr. Barnes is that rare surgeon-leader who not only knows how to lead, but listen, champion, motivate and move institutions — as he ably demonstrated during his previous leadership positions at major surgeon societies and academic institutions.

Barnes himself has been refreshingly candid about what excites him most.

After six months as interim chancellor, he says what stood out wasn’t just strategy or spreadsheets, but the people — the executive team and the more than 12,000 members of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences family.

His vision going forward centers on culture: making University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences known for hospitality, service, and putting patients, families, and guests first. Yes, even in health care. Even in orthopaedics.

Dr. Barnes is a University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine grad (with honors), residency-trained in Little Rock, fellowship-trained at Brigham & Women’s/Harvard, plus international training in Switzerland and participation in the prestigious John N. Insall Traveling Fellowship.

He later led Arkansas Specialty Orthopaedics as president and managing partner for more than a decade — real-world leadership before academic leadership.

Nationally and internationally, Barnes is universally regarded as one of the foremost experts in hip and knee replacement.

He holds seven patents for orthopedic devices and implants, lectures around the globe, and has served as president of just about every major society many of us put on our CV wish lists: AAHKS, the Society for Arthritic Joint Surgery, the Mid-America Orthopaedic Association, the Southern Orthopaedic Association, and the Arkansas Orthopaedic Society. He remains deeply involved with AAOS, The Knee Society, The Hip Society, and multiple editorial boards.

University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is getting a global Life Sciences mentor, leader and luminary who brings to the position ground level knowledge of what it takes to care of patients, train surgeons, run a service line, and still lead this institutions and, indeed the global practice of Medical Science outcomes and culture.

With Lowry Barnes at the helm, the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences must be considered to be an emerging global centers for the art, science and practice for the Medical Sciences.
