SALT LAKE CITY, November 3, 2026 — Total Joint Orthopedics, Inc. (TJO), a developer of hip and knee replacement systems, announces the launch of its Klassic® Infection Spacer System (KISS), expanding the Klassic® Revision Knee System for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) revision procedures. This system is the first of its kind to be cleared for a dual indication: both permanent implantation and temporary implantation for PJI. Unlike traditional static or molded spacers constructed from cement, KISS features permanent implant materials (Aurum®/Ti, CoCr and ultra-high molecular-weight polyethylene).

The System’s modularity, with expanded fixation and augmentation options, helps deliver a stable, functional knee that preserves range of motion, reduces pain, and provides a straightforward path to reconstruction. The Ultra-PS® articulating surface features an ultracongruent design that provides stability through the full range of motion after extensive debridement in many PJI cases.

KISS leverages the efficiency of TJO’s Klassic ONE® System, requiring a single tray of instruments for up to 90% of cases. "Joint infection is among the most stressful issues a surgical team takes on," said Erin Hofmann, Chief Executive Officer of TJO. "KISS brings real simplicity and value to that complexity, allowing surgeons to adapt their surgical plan as needed to help improve patient outcomes.“

"I have been using articulating spacers for thirty years, offering earlier knee motion without increasing infection risk or spacer failure, so patients can keep moving between stages," said Aaron A. Hofmann, MD, Co-Founder and Chairman of TJO. "Seeing TJO bring a purpose-built spacer system to surgeons is especially meaningful to me."

KISS received FDA 510(k) clearance in July 2026 as part of the Klassic® Knee System. It includes a dual indication for temporary use for up to 180 days as an adjunct to total knee replacement in patients undergoing a two-stage procedure due to a septic process, and for permanent primary or revision TKA procedures.

KISS will debut at the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) Annual Meeting, November 5–8, 2026, in Grapevine, Texas. Surgeons can TJO’s Klassic® Infection Spacer, Klassic® Revision Knee, and Universal® Cone Systems at Booth 1503.

About Total Joint Orthopedics

Total Joint Orthopedics, Inc. (TJO) is a medical device company built to simplify joint replacement. As total joint arthroplasty moves increasingly into ambulatory surgery centers and value-driven care models, TJO’s Efficiency by Design® platform delivers long-term clinical performance through streamlined system architecture and reduced instrumentation complexity.

Its flagship Klassic® Knee System, supported by 12-year survivorship data, features a universal femoral design that eliminates left/right component redundancy and enables single-tray primary workflows. Across its portfolio, including the Klassic HD® Hip and Klassic® Revision Knee Systems, TJO requires a maximum of three instrument trays per procedure—reducing sterilization burden, improving turnover efficiency, and aligning with the economic realities of modern joint care. Surgeons have placed more than 55,000 TJO implants, and the company holds 31 FDA 510(k) clearances. To learn more, please visit tjoinc.com.

Why This Matters

Two Perspectives

MBA Lens: Economic and industry impact

Total Joint Orthopedics launched the Klassic® Infection Spacer System (KISS), expanding its Klassic® Revision Knee System for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) management. This system is the first cleared for dual indication (temporary and permanent implantation), offering a market differentiator. Leveraging TJO’s "Efficiency by Design®" platform, KISS aims to simplify complex PJI procedures, reduce instrumentation, and improve operational efficiency, aligning with value-driven care models.

  • KISS provides a competitive advantage with its dual FDA indication for temporary (up to 180 days) and permanent PJI revision.
  • The system enhances operational efficiency by utilizing a single instrument tray for most cases, reducing sterilization costs and improving turnover.

PhD Lens: Clinical and outcomes impact

Total Joint Orthopedics launched the Klassic® Infection Spacer System (KISS) for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) revision, cleared for dual indication: temporary (up to 180 days) and permanent implantation. It utilizes permanent implant materials (Aurum®/Ti, CoCr, UHMWPE) unlike cement spacers. The system's modularity and Ultra-PS® articulating surface aim to provide stability, preserve range of motion, and reduce pain, facilitating a functional knee post-debridement.

  • KISS employs advanced materials like Aurum®/Ti, CoCr, and UHMWPE, distinguishing it from conventional molded cement spacers.
  • The Ultra-PS® ultracongruent articulating surface is designed to maintain stability and range of motion, crucial after extensive PJI debridement.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
