FAYETTEVILLE, Ga., Sept. 16, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Piedmont Orthopedics | OrthoAtlanta is pleased to announce that Carson J. Smith, M.D. has joined the practice and is now seeing patients at its Fayetteville and Peachtree City locations.

Dr. Smith is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in foot and ankle care, dedicated to helping patients return to an active, healthy lifestyle through personalized treatment plans tailored to their individual needs. He provides both surgical and non-surgical care for a wide range of foot and ankle conditions, including fractures, sprains, arthritis, Achilles tendon disorders, bunions, deformities such as flatfoot, sports injuries, and general orthopedic injuries. He also treats common fractures of the upper and lower extremities.

Dr. Smith has a special interest in advanced foot and ankle procedures, including total ankle replacement, ankle arthroscopy, and minimally invasive bunion correction (MICA). These modern techniques are designed to improve patient outcomes, reduce recovery time, and restore function.

Originally from Memphis, Dr. Smith developed an early interest in medicine through his fascination with the human body and his desire to help others. His passion for sports and biomechanics ultimately led him to orthopedic surgery, where he found foot and ankle care to be particularly rewarding due to its complexity and its ability to restore mobility and quality of life.

Dr. Smith is a member of the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is also fluent in Spanish, allowing him to better serve a diverse range of patients.

"We are pleased to welcome Dr. Smith to Piedmont Orthopedics | OrthoAtlanta," said Michael Ochal, Chief Executive Officer. "His expertise in sports medicine and comprehensive orthopedic care strengthens our Fayetteville and Peachtree City teams and enhances our ability to provide high-quality, patient-centered care throughout the South Metro region."

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
