Joint Preservation Innovations Announces FDA 510(k) Clearance for the Articulator™ Arthroscopic Bur — the First and Only FDA-Cleared Articulating Rotary Cutting Instrument

NAPERVILLE, IL – December 8, 2025 / OrthoSpineNews / – Joint Preservation Innovations Inc. (JPI), a leader in next-generation joint preservation technologies, today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted 510(k) clearance for the Articulator™ Arthroscopic Bur, the first and only FDA-cleared articulating rotary cutting instrument designed for use in arthroscopic procedures.

The Articulator™ Arthroscopic Bur represents a transformational leap in arthroscopic bone resection, delivering never-before-seen dexterity in a powered surgical instrument. Its patented articulating mechanism provides up to 601% greater cutting surface area1 compared to traditional straight burs, enabling surgeons to access and contour bone in tight, curved, or obstructed spaces that were previously difficult—if not impossible—to address.

A New Category of Enabling Technology for Joint Preservation

“Surgeons consistently tell us that current straight burs limit what they can accomplish inside constrained joints,” said Hardik Goel, CFO & Co-Founder. “The Articulator™ Bur offers a category-defining solution that improves precision, enhances access, and aligns directly with the broader industry shift toward joint preservation, smaller incisions, and enabling technology for minimally invasive surgery.”

Engineered specifically for anatomically constrained joints, the Articulator™ Bur serves as a new class of enabling hardware that:

  • Unlocks bone-resection capabilities not achievable with straight burs, especially in hip, shoulder, ankle, and elbow preservation procedures.

  • Improves procedural efficiency by reducing the need for portal changes, instrument exchanges, or awkward bur angulation.

  • Lowers the learning curve for arthroscopic surgeons performing complex reshaping procedures such as femoroplasty and rim trimming in the hip, subscapularis footprint preparation and distal clavicle osteophyte excision in the shoulder, and curved bone resections in tight anatomic corridors of other joints in the body.

  • Expands the surgeon’s operative reach, allowing for safer, more precise, and more anatomic bone removal.

“The Articulator™ Bur gives surgeons controllable access to bone in ways that simply were not possible with conventional straight burs,” said Sanjeev Bhatia, MD, CEO and Co-Founder of JPI. “This is a foundational enabling technology that enhances what joint-preserving arthroscopy can achieve today, and it lays the groundwork for the next generation of minimally invasive surgery.”
