Using its popular EOS imaging platform, Alphatec Holdings, Inc. (ATEC) has launched an end-to-end intelligent spine surgery navigation system with an artificial intelligence back bone brand for spine surgeons which takes navigation way beyond just pedicle screw placement.

The new AI-based system, brand named EOS Insight, is powered by standardized EOSedge™ scans. EOS Insight debuted at OrthoIndy Hospital and was put through the paces by David G. Schwartz, M.D. and Craig McMains, M.D.

“My first clinical experience with EOS Insight affirmed that the cutting-edge features ATEC developed can transform surgery,” said Dr. Schwartz. “Relying on EOS Insight, I entered surgery with an efficient, AI-driven customized plan, precise alignment measurements and rods pre-contoured for the long construct.”

Much More Than Pedicle Screw Placement

OTW asked CEO Miles what sort of “friction” EOS Insight removes for spine surgeons. Miles said, “The EOS Insight brings unprecedented objectivity to every step of spine care from pre-op through post-op. It includes an imaging and AI informed plan, intra-operative understanding of execution to that plan, and post operative patient and practice insights that are otherwise non-existent. Other ‘enabling technology’ in spine is generally designed to precisely place pedicle screws, which from our standpoint, is NOT an area of friction.”

“To date, surgeons manually calculate a patients’ alignment measures as part of the surgical planning process. Doing so is arduous and time consuming, and as a result, alignment measures are often not calculated. Yet the achievement of alignment is the highest correlative to durable long-term outcomes in spine surgery.”

“EOS Insight leverages EOS imaging and AI to, first, quickly and automatically calculate alignment measures, and, second, integrate those measures into a custom, pre-operative surgical plan. Surgeons can even request a rod contoured precisely to the custom surgical plan, which is delivered prior to surgery.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.
