Gainesville, Florida-based Orthopedic Care Partners (OCP) has continued its expansion with its acquisition of Utah-based The Orthopedic Partners. In addition to Utah, Orthopedic Care Partners operate in Florida, Missouri, Colorado, and Arizona.

Orthopedic Care Partners is a private equity-backed orthopedic practice management platform. This acquisition represents the fifth state for Orthopedic Care Partners and is significant for its location in the Western United States.

Orthopedic Care Partners CEO Rich Gilbert, M.D. said, “This partnership not only extends our reach into a key region but also strengthens our commitment to providing the highest standard of orthopedic care across the nation by partnering with best-in-class orthopedic practices.”

The Orthopedic Partners will now have four locations in Utah including Park City, Heber City, Salt Lake City, and the Park City Surgery Center. Its team includes 11 orthopedic providers specializing in the following: foot and ankle, knee, shoulder, hand and wrist, sports medicine, and pediatric orthopedic care. According to the company, Orthopedic Partners has even “served as an official medical provider to the US Ski & Snowboard teams.”

The Orthopedic Partners Shoulder Specialist Mike Metcalf, M.D. expressed support for the acquisition stating, “We are very excited to join the OCP team.”

Dr. Metcalf continued, “This partnership enables us to mesh our relentless pursuit of delivering outstanding orthopedic care with OCP’s extensive network and resources. It’s definitely a win-win for both our patients and our practice.”

According to the Orthopedic Care Partners, affiliated practices “retain their own unique identities and brands while maintaining clinical autonomy.” Its expansion is taking many forms including adding physicians, increasing ancillary services, and adding and expanding locations. It has an extensive partners list which includes Motion Orthopaedics, The Orthopaedic Institute, The Steadman Clinic, and many others in Florida, Missouri, Colorado, Arizona, and now Utah.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
