Steven K. Groff, M.D, one of the founders of Orthopedic & Spine Specialists (OSS) passed away on June 4, 2023, in Dallastown, Pennsylvania, at the age of 58.

He started his clinical practice at KDV in York, but then in 2004 he helped open Orthopedic & Spine Specialists.

Groff was president of OSS for many years while working as a spine and joint surgeon for the York community. He also opened the first free-standing orthopedic hospital in York County in 2010.

In 2011, however, a serious bicycle accident left him with injuries that prevented him from being able to continue his medical practice.

Groff was born on February 24, 1965, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to Kenneth G. and Shirley L. Groff. He grew up on the family’s farm in Strasburg.

He graduated from Lampeter-Strasburg High School in 1983 and then attended Albright College in Reading, Pennsylvania, for his undergraduate degree. After graduation, he decided to pursue a career in medicine.

In 1991 he received his medical degree from the University of Virginia Medical School in Charlottesville, Virginia, and then completed his orthopedic residency at Penn State Hershey in 1996.

He and his wife Julie had been married for 35 years. After he was sidelined from orthopedic surgery by his injuries, he and his wife, along with their son Taylor, decided to open a restaurant, brewery, and event center on their 77-acre farm, Wyndridge Farm.

He also started two other businesses in 2018: Groff North America and Groff Health.

Before his accident, he was very active, boating, jet skiing, and riding his motorcycle. Recently he started playing guitar again in the Praise Band at Aldersgate Church.

Groff is survived by his wife Julie, his parents Kenneth and Shirley, his son Taylor S. Groff and his family, and his brother and sister. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
