Ronald (Ron) Lloyd has been appointed president and chief executive officer of Spinal Elements, Inc., a spine technology company based in Carlsbad, California.

Lloyd comes to Spinal Elements from Aziyo Biologics, Inc., a biotech company focused on regenerative medicine. At Aziyo Biologics, Lloyd served as chief executive officer for over four years during which time he took the company public. Prior to that role he ran a $1 billion business as president of hospital therapies at Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals. He has served in leadership positions at a number of other notable companies including Baxalta, Baxter International Inc., and Abbott Laboratories.

OTW spoke with Lloyd about what he is most looking forward to in his new role. Lloyd sid, “Over the past four years I was able to transform Aziyo Biologics into one of the leading cellular bone suppliers by partnering with nearly a dozen spine and orthopedic companies. Within the spine marketplace, I was always impressed by Spinal Elements portfolio of innovative solutions, including the novel MIS Ultra® product line.”

Lloyd continued, “As the new CEO of Spinal Elements, I am excited to have the opportunity to lead this innovative company and together with my dedicated and passionate colleagues, expand the breadth of our surgical customer base so that more patients can benefit our novel technologies.”

Lloyd is succeeding Spinal Elements Co-Founder, President, and CEO Jason Blain. Blain has served in leadership roles with the organization since its founding as Quantum Orthopedics in 2003. From 2003 to 2012, Blain served on the board of directors and as chief technology officer. In 2012, he was appointed president and served as both president and chief operating officer for six months in 2017. At the end of 2017, Blain was appointed president and CEO.

In the press release, Blain commented, “Leading Spinal Elements has been the most rewarding and humbling experience of my professional career. I am thankful for all of the colleagues and friends with whom I had the pleasure to serve during those more than 19 years.”

Blain continued, “I look forward to watching the Spinal Elements team flourish under Ron’s guidance in the coming months and years.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
