First Settlement Orthopaedics’ Jesse Ramirez Ada Dies at Age 70

Jesse Ramirez Ada, M.D., a former orthopedic surgeon with First Settlement Orthopaedics in Marietta, Ohio, passed away on January 31, 2023, at the age of 70.

He was a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon who brought pain relief and improved mobility and function to his patients at First Settlement. He treated all kinds of cases from trauma to arthritis to broken bones.

Ada earned his medical degree from the University of California at Los Angeles and subsequently completed an internship at the University of Cincinnati and a fellowship in orthopedic trauma at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

He also served in the military as a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy LCDR at Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida.

Ada was very passionate about growing the field of orthopedic surgery and providing excellent care to his patients. He is a former president of the Washington County Medical Society, Diplomate for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a member of the American Medical Association, Ohio State Medical Association, Parkersburg Academy of Medicine, and the West Virginia Orthopaedic Society.

He was also a religious man and was a member of the Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Marietta and St. Mary Catholic Church in Delaware.

Ada was born on February 22, 1952, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to the late José Q. Ada and Maria Ramirez Ada. He was married to his wife Laurie for 39 years and they raised three children together.

He is survived by his wife and children Megan (fiance’ Joshua Cook) Ada of Westerville, Jessalyn (Thomas) Socha of Mandeville, Louisiana, and Hans Ada of Guam. And grandchildren: Ada Haery and Rowan, Elia and Tasi Socha. He also leaves behind his brother Joseph and his sisters, Frances Bell, Maryann Eusebio, and Theresa Baragiola, his mother-in-law, Donna Cefalu, brothers-in-law, Thomas Cefalu and Tim Cefalu and sisters-in-law, Beth Cefalu and Tricia Cross. He is also remembered by his nieces and nephews.

Ada was preceded in death by his parents and by his sister Linda and his father-in-law Wayne Cefalu.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
