Katrin Sternberg, Ph.D. has joined CeramTec as president medical and a member of CeramTec’s Management Board.

Dr. Sternberg takes over the position from Hadi Saleh, M.D. who has been serving as both president medical and CeramTec CEO. Moving forward, Dr. Saleh will remain as CEO. In addition to Dr. Saleh, Dr. Sternberg will also work with CeramTec CFO Eric Oellerer and CeramTec President Industrial Horst W. Garbrecht on CeramTec’s Management Board.

Dr. Sternberg joins CeramTec from Aesculap, B. Braun’s surgical division. At Aesculap, she was a member of the executive board and was responsible for research and development, quality management, regulatory affairs, and medical scientific affairs.

Dr. Sternberg obtained her Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Rostock in Germany. She also completed her habilitation at the Institute for Biomedical Engineering at the University of Rostock. Dr. Sternberg served as a professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Rostock for five years.

OTW spoke with Dr. Sternberg about what she is looking forward to in her new role. Dr. Sternberg told OTW, “Bringing together science with market demands and most of all patient needs is what drives me. After I had spent several years in academia, I got fascinated with medtech when I first joined the industry nine years ago.”

Dr. Sternberg continued, “I am looking forward to working with the team at CeramTec, so we can together leverage the great potentials of innovative high-performance ceramics for medical applications and further advance CeramTec’s footprint as a leading global medtech platform.”

CeramTec is a manufacturer and supplier of technical ceramics with headquarters in Plochingen, Germany. Its high-performance ceramics have a variety of applications including medical technologies and orthopedic implants.

In the press release, Dr. Saleh commented, “As we continue to advance CeramTec’s footprint as a leading global medtech platform, we firmly believe that putting a dedicated leadership resource in place for our Medical Markets is an important next step and signal to the market. The Company has been experiencing continued significant growth in demand particularly for its high-performance ceramic solutions for medical applications.”

Dr. Saleh continued, “As we plan to further diversify our medtech portfolio, we look forward to having Katrin Sternberg contribute her great expertise in the medical device space. With her impressive business acumen and academic track record, we believe she is a great addition to our team.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
