Orthopedic surgeon Daniel Alexander, M.D. has been appointed as the chief administrative officer for orthopedics, surgical services, and the physician practices affiliated with Auburn Community Hospital (ACH) in Auburn, New York.

Dr. Alexander is an orthopedic surgeon practicing in upstate New York. He is the founder of Finger Lakes Bone and Joint Center and Open MRI of the Finger Lakes. He has dedicated more than 20 years to orthopedic surgery and has performed over 20,000 surgeries during that time. He held his most recent position since 2009, serving as chair of orthopedics for Rochester Regional Health eastern region in Rochester, New York.
Dr. Alexander joined Auburn Orthopaedic Specialists in October of this year and will continue to serve patients from his orthopedic practice. He will also take on new responsibilities including the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the medical care in ACH’s surgical services and physician practices affiliated with ACH. Per the press release, he will focus on “improving medical and operational practices.”
ACH is the largest employer in Cayuga County. ACH President and CEO Scott Berlucchi commented, “We are thrilled to be able to utilize Dr. Alexander’s considerable experience and leadership skills as our new Chief Administrative Officer.”
Berlucchi continued, “Hospitals and physicians need alignment of their goals to foster safe and high-quality care. Dr. Alexander has the kind of leadership and clinical capabilities to forge these alliances. He not only has excellent clinical skills as a practicing orthopedic surgeon but also understands how to build successful practices and service lines and is an outstanding manager.”
Dr. Alexander’s service goes beyond the hospital and operating room. He is an active member in his community and has helped to foster programs and resources to help the underserved. He played a key role in building the emergency department at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital. Dr. Alexander built a community center in the Buffalo neighborhood where he grew up and helped to build a Boys and Girls Club in Geneva, New York. He is also a co-chair of the Boldly Buffalo campaign, a billion dollar fundraising effort to support his alma mater, the University of Buffalo.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?
Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.
We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
