Spine surgeon Vamsy Bobba, M.D. has joined University Orthopedics, a practice with locations in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Dr. Bobba, who joins the practice’s Center for Spine Health, focuses on spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, instability, deformity, trauma, compression fractures, tumor, and infection.

“The addition of Dr. Bobba—an extremely skilled surgeon committed to enhanced patient outcomes—to our team of renowned spine surgeons will help ensure University Orthopedics continues to provide our patients with the highest quality, most cutting-edge orthopedic care available,” said Edward Akelman, M.D., president of University Orthopedics. “A doctor of his caliber is undoubtedly an asset to our team and, more importantly, to our patients.”

“Each patient’s situation is unique and should be treated as such. It is always my goal to tailor an appropriate plan for each patient’s individual needs, whether surgically or non-surgically, to help restore their quality of life,” Dr. Bobba said. “I am thrilled to join a practice that embraces the same commitment to world-class, comprehensive care as I do.”

After earning his undergraduate degree at Columbia University, Dr. Bobba obtained a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University in Bioscience Regulatory Affairs. He then attended medical school at Drexel University in Philadelphia and went on to complete an orthopedic surgery residency at the Detroit Medical Center. Dr. Bobba then did a spine fellowship at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

“I am excited to be a part of University Orthopedics to help expand spine patient outreach across Rhode Island and Southern Massachusetts,” Dr. Bobba told OTW. “I hope to truly get to know my patients and their families and what their goals are and then work together to design a treatment plan to achieve those goals.”

“As I transition into my new role, I would like to work with the community at large to help educate patients about neck and back issues and when is the appropriate time to seek care. I am working with hospitals to help provide the latest advances in spine surgery, with smaller incisions and quicker recoveries. My hope is that this will allow patients to achieve their goals and get back to what they love in a quicker manner.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
