OEM medical implant and instrument manufacturer Tecomet, Inc. is forming a strategic partnership with additive manufacturing specialist, Precision ADM Inc., to expand its additive and subtractive manufacturing capabilities in the medical device, orthopedic implants, aerospace, and defense markets.

The partnership will enable both companies to expand their capabilities and increase their capacities for meeting customer timelines. According to companies, Tecomet will now offer “additional process expertise into new material areas—industrial engineering plastics, nickel alloys, aluminum, cobalt chrome and 316 stainless steel, while expanding capacity in titanium and 17-4 stainless steel.”

Furthermore, the partnership will facilitate “expansion of Precision ADM’s Advanced Digital Manufacturing® (ADM®) proprietary set of processes, which has produced millions of additive manufactured implants and instruments in the medical market.”

Both companies have shared expertise in a number of key markets. This shared expertise and complementary capabilities will enable the two companies to “compress customer’s development timelines.”

The focus of the partnership is “driving lead-time out of the manufacturing process.” The focus will also be on meeting the changing trends of the market and the expanding needs of a global customer base by offering “scalable manufacturing solutions.”

Precision ADM President and CEO Martin Petrak expressed excitement about the partnership, commenting, “We are thrilled to be partnering with Tecomet, an organization with a history of excellence that clearly values Precision ADM’s highly technical and advanced manufacturing processes and capabilities.”

Petrak continued, “Together with Tecomet, we will be able to offer clients shorter lead times and more efficient production with the same commitment to quality and manufacturing excellence for which we are both known. Our shared expertise and history in the medical device and aerospace industries leads to a naturally collaborative relationship. Precision ADM looks forward to a long and productive partnership with Tecomet.”

Tecomet is headquartered in Woburn, Massachusetts. The company has more than 16 facilities across the globe.

Precision ADM is headquartered in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The company utilizes 3D printing to manufacture components and devices for a number of key industries including orthopedics.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
