Dr. Bernard Allan Lublin, an orthopedic surgeon and true renaissance man, died on June 5, 2022, at the age of 85.

A lover of learning and science, he also studied how chromosomal mutations cause breast and ovarian cancer, primarily in women of Ashkenazi-Jewish descent. He went on to establish the Jewish Genetic Foundation, which is now part of American Technion Society, and convinced the National Comprehensive Cancer Network to change their guidelines for the prophylactic treatment of these diseases.

He also convinced Myriad Genetics to develop and license pre-implantation genetic diagnosis for the first time.

Even when he was on vacation, he always studied several nonfiction books about his destination before going. Before he traveled to Israel, he memorized the Hatikvah, the national anthem.

He also loved sailing and often took cruises along the Chesapeake and the Piankatank River. He also cultivated grape vines and crepe myrtle branches and planted Japanese cherry trees to leave something beautiful behind for those who came after him.

His friends and family, writing in his obituary, said that for Lublin “any mysterious medical symptom was a problem to be fully investigated, solved and addressed. Bernie always remembered the quote he first heard upon graduation from Yale, ‘We’ll all do well; may some do good.’”

Lublin was from Henrico, Virginia, and attended Yale University and New York University Medical School. He also served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. In 1960, he moved to Richmond to complete an internship and residency in orthopedic surgery at Medical College of Virginia. He married his wife Bobbie there and they raise three children.

Giving back to others was also important to Lublin and so he did it often. He received the 2016 Jewish National Fund of Southwest Florida’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Family was also very important to him. He loved spending time with his grandchildren—Oliver, Ava, Isaac, Nate and Caroline—playing quadruple solitaire.

Lublin is survived by his wife Bobbie, his children Suzzie, Keith and Kathi, their spouses and their children. He also leaves behind his brother, sister-in-law, and nieces and nephews as well as countless extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anna and Raymond Lublin, of Hartford, Connecticut.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
