Lewisville, Texas-based orthopedic medical device company Orthofix Medical, Inc. has announced that Kimberley Elting is now the president of its Global Orthopedics business.

Elting has been with Orthofix since 2016 when she joined as chief legal officer. A year later she assumed the role of chief legal and administrative officer. She then transitioned to chief legal and development officer where she worked until assuming her newest position.

In addition to legal responsibilities, Elting also oversaw many other functions at Orthofix including regulatory and quality, corporate communications, and business development. In her newest role she is succeeding Paul Gonsalves who, per the Orthofix press release, is “leaving the company to pursue other opportunities.”

Orthofix President and CEO Jon Serbousek commented, “With more than 25 years in the medical device space, a track record of success at Orthofix, and a demonstrated passion for our Orthopedics business, Kim [Elting] will bring strong leadership and meaningful perspective to this business.”

Serbousek continued, “We have made significant investments to build the Orthopedics business unit and we feel confident that she is the right person to lead this team to continue to drive growth in this sector of our business.”

Since its founding in 1980 in Verona, Italy, Orthofix has grown into one of the largest orthopedic device companies in the world. It has two business units, Orthofix Spine and Orthofix Orthopedics. Elting’s leadership has contributed to the company’s recent growth. This growth has included numerous acquisitions and investments in both companies and technology.

Elting remarked, “The Orthopedics business was the foundation for Orthofix over 40 years ago when this company was started in Verona, Italy, and it has a long history of providing meaningful products and life-changing patient solutions to orthopedic surgeons world-wide.”

Elting continued, “I look forward to working with this talented team as we continue to innovate and bring to market differentiated products and solutions for pediatric and adult deformity correction and limb reconstruction, helping deliver on our commitment to improve patient mobility.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
