Uwe Siedler and Susanne Siedler, the founders of Alzenau, Germany-based SIGNUS, a spinal implant company, have announced that their daughter Mareike Siedler has joined the SIGNUS Board of Directors.

Since its founding almost 30 years ago, SIGNUS has been a family business. In 2015, Mareike joined her parents’ company as a product manager. Two years later she transitioned into her role as head of marketing. Her responsibilities include communication, product management, and clinical affairs.

Uwe and Susanne commented, “Our daughter’s breath of fresh air is strategically important for the future of our company. Ever since she joined, she has been a driver of new perspectives, ideas and plans.”

Notably, those new ideas and plans have included a transformation of how SIGNUS presents itself to the public. Since Mareike joined the company, SIGNUS has had an increased web presence including web seminars and activity on social media channels.

Mareike commented on her brand focus, stating, “Our strong family business should continue to develop into a strong brand with my commitment.”

Mareike didn’t start her career with SIGNUS. Instead, she focused on developing her knowledge and skills outside the company to foster her independence. She remarked, “[T]his is how I was and am able to appreciate the roots and tradition of my parents’ company and at the same time set my own entrepreneurial and innovative impulses.”

Mareike attended the University of Applied Sciences in Germany where she obtained her Bachelor of Business Administration in international management. She later attended the FOM University of Applied Sciences for Economics and Management in Germany and obtained a Master of Arts in marketing and sales.

She began her professional career as a sales representative for global medical device company Arthrex, Inc. She then moved on to other Germany-based companies where she focused on consulting, project management, and brand management. Mareike brought this knowledge and expertise with her when she joined SIGNUS.

Founded in 1994, SIGNUS creates solutions for surgical spine care. Its portfolio includes products for every part of the spine, from the cervical to the sacral. These products are primarily manufactured at a nearby production site. SIGNUS certified implants are sold across the globe.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
