Theodore Maravich, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon and clinical professor, passed away at the age of 90 on December 14, 2021, at Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach, California.

Dr. Maravich was a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and an associate clinical professor in the department of orthopedic surgery at the University of California at Irvine.

He was born in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania on December 3, 1931, to Dmitar and Boja Maravich. He was one of six children.

Dr. Maravich served in the United States Army straight out of high school and after completing his service he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1957.

He then went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine Degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1961. He finished several orthopedic surgical residencies in different parts of the U.S. before setting up practice in Southern California.

He completed an orthopedic surgery residency at Evanston Hospital, Northshore University Health System in Evanston, Illinois as well as one at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University in Chicago. He spent a transitional year interning at South Side Hospital in New York.

He also did a residency at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Louisville, Kentucky and that is where he met and married Helen Wooldridge of Mayfield, Kentucky in 1964. They had just recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary.

In 1969, Dr. Maravich and his wife moved to Newport Beach, California and have lived there ever since in the same home. He spent more than 20 years practicing general orthopedic surgery. He was well-regarded by his colleagues and his patients for his passion for his field. His California state medical license was active all the way up until his death.

Dr. Maravich was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Nick, Walter, Sam, and Rudy and his sister Mildred. He is survived by his wife Helen as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and nephews.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
