After a nearly yearlong search process, Corcoran, Minnesota-based Bone Foam, Inc. has named Buzz Hannahan to be its new Chief Executive Officer.

In his new role, Hannahan succeeds Chad Robran who will continue to serve on the company’s board of directors. Hannahan will also serve on the company’s board.

Bone Foam is a medical device company that develops patient positioners for orthopedic trauma procedures. Since its founding, the company has expanded its portfolio to include solutions for spine, arthroplasty, hand, shoulder, and elbow.

Hannahan began his career as a professional baseball player with the Philadelphia Phillies. After leaving the organization in 2006, Hannahan spent six years with Zimmer Inc. as an orthopedic trauma medical device sales representative. He left the organization after achieving the title of regional sales director in 2013.

Hannahan then moved to CareFusion, now a Becton Dickinson (BD) company, as a senior sales consultant. He was then promoted to West Director of Sales at Care Continuum where he “managed the Pyxis Technologies Portfolio of $70 Million” and continued to perform in the top nationally.

Hannahan told OTW, “Bone Foam has an amazing story and I’m thrilled to lead Bone Foam’s next chapter. After meeting the team today, I was blown away with the talent and their passion. For the past 15 years I have been a patient safety advocate with Zimmer and BD. I’m inspired by Bone Foam’s solutions and the opportunity we have with our customers to eliminate the risk, waste, and time of delay in the OR.”

Bone Foam Executive Vice President Peter Cole commented, “This leadership transition occurs during a period of significant positive momentum across the organization. This month marks the three year anniversary of our expansion strategy—focused on product innovation and distribution—which set the foundation for a credible model to reach aggressive growth targets on a compounding basis.”

Cole continued, “Buzz’s [Hannahan] relentless focus on the customer as a top sales and business development executive, as well as his strong track record of grit dating back to his playing days, are just a few of the transformational elements of his candidacy that position him well to successfully lead a company with a broad but underpenetrated footprint. Our Board of Directors is confident Buzz is the right leader to guide Bone Foam into its next era of growth as we continue to change the patient positioning paradigm in favor of value-based standards.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
