Jacksonville, Florida-based Performance Orthopedics and Spine, a collaboration between Ascension Florida and Gulf Coast and Healthcare Outcomes Performance Company (HOPCo), has expanded across northwestern Florida.

Launched in the fall of 2020, Performance Orthopedics and Spine is a “clinically integrated network (CIN) of musculoskeletal [MSK] physician practices” in northern Florida. With the expansion, providers will be able to provide MSK care to patients throughout the Florida Panhandle. Per the press release, surgeries will be “performed at Ascension Sacred Heart hospitals in Miramar Beach, Panama City, and Pensacola, as well as outpatient surgery centers across the region.”

OTW spoke with Ascension Florida and Gulf Coast President and CEO Tom VanOsdol about what sets the Performance Orthopedics and Spine brand apart from its competitors. VanOsdol informed OTW, “This unique brand and concierge, personalized way of delivering care was built with patients, physicians and caregivers in mind to create an unparalleled, truly special experience for everyone involved. By organizing and aligning the most gifted orthopedic surgeons, spine, and neurosurgeons who utilize a proven set of evidence-based protocols backed by the strength and depth of a comprehensive, clinically and economically integrated network and system, we can improve care coordination, optimize the entire experience, and provide differentially better clinical outcomes.”

VanOsdol continued, “All of this helps patients and loved ones get back to doing what they love to do more seamlessly, and faster. All of our physicians and caregivers share the same commitment to providing the highest level of care and caring to the individuals and families we’re so blessed to serve throughout our Florida communities.”

OTW also spoke with HOPCo President and Chief Transformation Officer Wael Barsoum, M.D. about the partnership and expansion plans. Dr. Barsoum told OTW, “We are always looking for markets to expand this model with our Ascension partners. With the success of the Jacksonville platform, we saw an area of need in Pensacola, and I think that will likely continue as we examine other regions of Florida, Southern Georgia and Alabama.”

Dr. Barsoum continued, “Anywhere where MSK care is fragmented, or alignment is lacking, that is where we see the opportunity.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
