Arlington, Tennessee-based MicroPort Orthopedics Inc., a global orthopedic device and technology company, has proudly announced that C. Lowry Barnes, M.D. has joined its leadership team as medical director.

A board certified and fellowship trained total joint surgeon, Dr. Barnes is the chair of orthopaedics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Health in Little Rock, Arkansas. He has a keen interest in hip and knee replacement surgery and has globally influenced the orthopedic industry through his expertise and teaching. Recently, Dr. Barnes served as the president of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. He is also the editor of The Journal of Surgical Orthopaedic Advances and serves on the editorial board of various other scientific journals.

Dr. Barnes’s relationship with MicroPort Orthopedics stems from his involvement with its predecessor company where he was a design surgeon. He worked on many of the predecessor company’s implants including the Evolution® Knee, a medial pivot knee system. In his new role as medical director, Dr. Barnes will “play a key role in the strategic decision-making and vision of the company, including medical education and training, clinical research, product development, surgeon relations, and same-day surgical procedures around the world.”

Dr. Barnes commented, “I have enjoyed working with the leadership team at MicroPort, and I look forward to engaging with their international sales team as we develop a high-touch, high tech approach to surgeon engagement.”

Dr. Barnes continued, “The opportunity to expand my role as medical director will allow for accelerated progress in innovation, leadership, and education—further establishing MicroPort as a leader in the medical device industry.”

The mission of MicroPort Orthopedics is to “become the trusted partner of healthcare professionals who share a belief that hip and knee replacements of the past are not good enough for the patient today.” MicroPort Orthopedics partners with surgeons to better serve patients across the globe.

MicroPort Orthopedics President Benny Hagag expressed excitement about the announcement. Hagag said, “We are excited to announce that Dr. Barnes will be serving as MicroPort Orthopedics’ medical director.”

Hagag continued, “Adding a knowledgeable and committed surgeon like Dr. Barnes is yet another way that MicroPort is prioritizing its advancement in the orthopedic device space, and we look forward to the expertise and leadership that he brings to the organization.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
