Omar Behery, M.D., a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon, has joined the joint replacement team at Chicago, Illinois-based Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush (MOR).

Dr. Behery is a graduate of Chicago, Illinois-based Rush Medical College. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at New York, New York-based NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital (formerly known as Hospital for Joint Diseases). He then went to Charlotte, North Carolina, for his adult hip and knee joint reconstruction fellowship training at the OrthoCarolina Hip and Knee Center.

Dr. Behery’s specialties include minimally invasive hip and knee replacement and complex and revision hip and knee reconstruction. He also performs robotic and computer navigation-assisted hip and knee replacement.

He is patient focused and, according to Midwest Orthopaedics, Dr. Behery “guides patients to the most appropriate treatment option to overcome their pain and loss of function, which may include physical therapy, joint injections, or surgery.” Dr. Behery will serve patients from two MOR Illinois locations: Naperville and Joliet.

OTW spoke with Dr. Behery about his decision to join the MOR team. “I’m absolutely thrilled to return to Chicago to become part of a stellar team of leaders at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush [MOR]. And, I’m looking forward to joining the team in providing the best care to our patients.”

In addition to patient care, Dr. Behery also conducts academic research. According to Midwest Orthopaedics, Dr. Behery’s research focuses on “patient outcomes following primary and revision hip and knee replacement.” His other research interests include “gait biomechanics following joint replacement” and “cementless total knee arthroplasty.” His academic pursuits have resulted in many peer-reviewed publications and podium presentations.

MOR physicians are the official team doctors for the Chicago Bulls, Chicago White Sox, Chicago Fire Soccer Club, and Joffrey Ballet. MOR has 13 Chicago area locations, including its newest location in Joliet which will open later this year.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
