San Diego, California-based NuVasive, Inc., a spine technology company, has appointed Massimo Calafiore to chief commercial officer and Ryan Donahoe to chief technology officer.

Calafiore has held various leadership roles with NuVasive since joining the company in 2017. Most recently, he served as executive vice president, global business units. According to the company’s press release, Calafiore will now “oversee the product marketing, commercial, and commercial enablement functions.”

In his new role Calafiore will also manage NuVasive Specialized Orthopedics, a division focused on complex reconstruction, limb lengthening, and innovative orthopedic solutions, and NuVasive Clinical Services, a provider of intraoperative neuromonitoring services.

Calafiore told OTW, “NuVasive has the strongest innovation pipeline and most clinically proficient commercial team in spine. These strengths coupled with the recent launch of the Pulse platform [an integrated technology platform for spine surgery] will help lead the next phase of growth for the company.”

Calafiore continued, “This new role is an incredible opportunity to execute our go-to market strategy with these immensely talented teams as we work to scale our business and become the most trusted partner for our surgeons, providers, and patients.”

Donahoe has spent 15 years with NuVasive where his 20 issued and pending patents have helped to develop the company’s spine portfolio. He has worked with surgeons to help develop spine technologies, focusing on the anterior, posterior, and cervical. In his new role as chief technology officer, Donahoe will “continue to lead spine research and development.”

Donahoe spoke with OTW about his history with NuVasive and his excitement moving forward. Donahoe informed OTW, “In the 15 years I’ve spent at NuVasive, we’ve delivered technologies that have helped improve outcomes across a broad set of clinical, operational and financial challenges faced within the spine market.”

Donahoe continued, “I could not be more excited about this new opportunity to leverage the strength and ingenuity of our spine R&D [research and development] team to transform the future of spine surgery and create the new standard for innovation in the market.”

NuVasive also announced that, in conjunction with this leadership change, Brent Boucher, executive vice president, global commercial “will transition from the company.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
