Alachua, Florida-based RTI Surgical, Inc. and Gainesville, Florida-based Exactech, Inc. have entered into a strategic agreement involving biologic bone substitutes.

RTI Surgical is a surgical implant supplier that serves its original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partners from four manufacturing locations in the United States and Europe. Per the press release, its expertise includes “tissue, biologics, and hardware.”

Exactech is a medical device company that creates and sells orthopedic implant devices and surgical instruments. In addition to its Active Intelligence® platform, it also has products for the shoulder, knee, hip, foot, ankle, biologics, and infections. Its products are available in the U.S. and more than 30 markets globally.

Exactech CEO Darin Johnson commented, “Biologic materials that support joint replacement surgery are an important facet of Exactech’s business. This collaboration with RTI [Surgical] allows each company to focus on our unique strengths.”

Johnson continued, “RTI [Surgical] has specialized expertise in the procurement, processing and manufacturing of human-derived tissue-based implants and Exactech markets and distributes the clinical solutions to help surgeons treat patients. We are pleased that this deal strengthens our long-standing partnership and positions us to have a more stable supply to support our selling efforts.”

The agreement includes RTI Surgical’s acquisition of Exactech’s Optecure. The demineralized bone matrix has FDA 510(k) clearance. According to the company, Optecure is “an engineered bone graft for reconstruction of the spine, pelvis and extremities.”

RTI Surgical CEO Olivier Visa commented on the partnership and the Optecure acquisition saying, “Having a partner like Exactech trust us to become a preferred supplier for their bone graft portfolio is a key milestone in our journey to become the market leading private-label implant supplier to OEMs.”

Visa continued, “Growing our partnership with Exactech and developing Optecure® enables us to achieve our vision of enhancing the gifts of life, and we thank the Exactech team for this partnership.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
