Leawood, Kansas-based ValueHealth, LLC and Boca Raton, Florida-based Ortho Florida, LLC have announced a joint venture focused on building a network of orthopedic surgery centers.

The partnership will increase value-based care in Florida via multiple orthopedic surgery centers. Per the press release, the centers will have an “emphasis on providing higher quality outcomes at lower costs.” The centers will provide “high-quality care” for Ortho Florida patients by “leveraging ValueHealth’s forward-moving technology platform that manages risk-sharing, warranty contracts, and bundled payment programs.”

Founded in 1997, ValueHealth is a healthcare services company. Per its website, the company has a “surgical digital platform that accelerates the transition from fee-for-service to value-based surgical care.” The company currently operates in more than 30 states and has nationally recognized Ambulatory Centers of Excellence (ACE)™.

ValueHealth CEO and President Don Bisbee told OTW that the partnership with ValueHealth developed because, “We shared a mutual vision for transforming value-based care in orthopedics, driven by the highest quality surgeons. In early conversations, we immediately recognized that ValueHealth and Ortho Florida were aligned on delivering surgical healthcare in a new and innovative model to patients, employers, and consumers in Florida.”

Bisbee continued, “We will do this by tapping into ValueHealth’s expertise and reputation for developing demand matching surgical networks and Ortho Florida’s best-in class physician members who are committed to advancing orthopedic surgical care.

Ortho Florida is equitably owned by its member physicians. Per the press release, “[e]ach solo or group practice whose physicians join Ortho Florida becomes its own care center under the ‘umbrella’ of Ortho Florida.” This enables “each care center to retain as much individuality and independence as legally possible while satisfying both the federal and state definitions of a group practice.”

In the press release, Ortho Florida CEO Dane Trask expressed excitement about the joint venture. Trask stated, “We are excited to join ValueHealth and bring higher-quality, lower cost value-based care to patients in Florida.”

Trask continued, “ValueHealth is aligned with our strategic and patient-centered care goals to improve access to high-quality care. With this partnership, Ortho Florida physician members will continue to raise the standards by improving patient outcomes following orthopedic surgical procedures.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
