Peek Health, S.A. (PeekMed), a medical technology company based in Braga, Portugal, has appointed Todd O. Davis to its board of directors as an independent board member.

Davis has over three decades of experience. Most recently, Davis served as president and general manager of the global knee business for Zimmer Biomet. The business included knee, bone cement, and computer assisted surgery and had more than $3 billion revenue. Davis joined Zimmer Biomet from Biomet during the merger in 2015. During his six plus years at Biomet, Davis served as president and general manager of the global knee business.

Davis spent much of his career with Zimmer. His first position at Zimmer was in customer service management. During the next 21 years, he held positions of increasing responsibility including senior vice president of the global knee and sports medicine business.

OTW spoke with PeekMed Chief Executive Officer and Chairman João Pedro Ribeiro about the appointment. Ribeiro was part of the selecting team and told OTW, “Todd [Davis] brings +30 years of experience in this market and led several teams along the way. He has a clear understanding of what all stakeholders in the value chain need.”

Ribeiro continued, “From the first interaction we had, we saw a lot of potential synergies and overlaps. We quickly realized we had to work together to improve the [o]rthopedic market.”

PeekMed is a three-dimensional (3D) pre-operative planning software for orthopedic surgery. Surgeons can use the software to plan surgeries and simulate surgical options including implant size.

In the press release, Davis commented, “As a business leader, with over 30 years in the orthopedic industry, I understand the importance of pre-operative planning, and its ability to reduce working capital and E&O expenses and believe that PeekMed solution is best in class.”

Davis continued, “I look forward to the opportunity to help expand our global presence and bring these solutions to patients, surgeons and hospitals around the globe.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
