Southeast Orthopedic Specialists, a regional musculoskeletal care provider based in Jacksonville, Florida, has added two physicians, Pavel Balduyeu, M.D., and David Remias, M.D., to its team of subspecialists.

Dr. Balduyeu is a board certified and fellowship trained interventional pain management specialist. He is a graduate of Belarusian State Medical University in Minsk, Republic of Belarus. After medical school, “Dr. Balduyeu completed a residency and fellowship in Anesthesiology at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, FL [Florida].” He is an active member of numerous professional organizations including the Florida Society of Anesthesiologists.

Dr. Remias is a board certified and fellowship trained non-operative sports medicine specialist. He is a graduate of American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in Cupecoy, St. Maarten. After medical school, Dr. Remias “completed a residency in Family Medicine and a fellowship in Sports Medicine at Presence Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago, IL [Illinois].” For the past five years, he has served the Jacksonville community as a sports medicine physician at Ascension St. Vincent’s.

Southeast Orthopedic Specialists is a growing orthopedic practice that now has 26 physicians. The addition of Dr. Balduyeu and Dr. Remias to the practice makes it one of the biggest orthopedic practices in Jacksonville.

OTW spoke with Southeast Orthopedics Specialists CEO Donnie Romine about the practice’s growth. Romine told OTW, “In 2019, we partnered with Healthcare Outcomes Performance Company (HOPCo) to accelerate our practice growth and value-based care platform. Through this partnership, we have already surpassed all of our growth targets and timelines. So, we will certainly be adding additional physicians to our team this year just as we did in 2020.”

Romine continued, “Our goal is to continue to transform the musculoskeletal market in Northeast Florida, and beyond, and physician recruitment is a major component of that process. As we continue to add the best and the brightest physicians, expand the services we offer to patients through a multitude of evidence-based treatment options and facilities, it is resulting in reliably better access to expert care and value for patients.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
