Private equity firm Trinity Hunt Partners, in partnership with Los Angeles Orthopaedic Surgery Specialists (LAOSS) and Northwest Extremity Specialists (NES), has introduced its musculoskeletal practice management platform, Unity MSK.

Unity MSK provides services to practices focused on orthopedic, podiatry, and associated specialty areas. Its support services are developed to enable practice growth while ensuring physicians can focus on providing patient care. Per the press release, “partner practices maintain their clinical autonomy, identities, and brands.”

OTW asked Unity MSK CEO Jon Garfield what led to the decision to form Unity MSK. Garfield told OTW, “An opportunity to assist Unity MSK’s partnered practices improve patient care by enabling physicians to focus on the care of their patients. By providing non-clinical administrative services to partner practices, Unity MSK enables physicians to spend more time with their patients and the medical staff and less on non-clinical activities.”

Garfield continued, “Unity MSK also provides administrative support to practice owners to help them grow their practice, which provides additional services for the patients and produces a rewarding environment for all physicians in the practice.”

Trinity Hunt Partners has extensive experience in healthcare services. Its partner, LAOSS, was founded in 2007. LAOSS provides orthopedic care to patients from its six locations throughout greater Los Angeles. Its other partner, NES, was founded in 2015. NES provides podiatric medical and surgical care to patients from its 12 locations throughout the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area.

OTW also asked Garfield about Unity MSK’s goals for the remainder of 2021. Garfield informed OTW, “We have three main growth goals for 2021. Providing support to our partner practices and helping such practices hire excellent experienced and new physicians. Second, we are also focused on assisting our partner practices in adding additional complementary orthopedic and MSK [musculoskeletal] services such as podiatry, physical therapy, surgery centers as well as others.”

Garfield continued, “Third, we are focused on assisting our current partner practices in expanding their existing California and Northwest locations, as well as partnering with additional orthopedic practices in California and the Northwest. We welcome the opportunity to speak with interested orthopedic and MSK [musculoskeletal] complementary ancillary practices.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
