Ortho Consulting Group, a management consultancy based in Newbury, England, has appointed Tom Baker as group chief operations officer.

Baker is now group chief operations officer for Ortho Consulting Group and Newbury, England-based Osteotec Ltd, a supplier of extremity orthopedic products. OCG Holdings is affiliated with Ortho Consulting Group and the holding company of Osteotec.

Baker has international finance and commercial operations experience. Most recently he served as finance director at Baxi Heating in Wokingham, England and before that he was in charge of commercial finance across the international markets division at Andover, England-based Twinings. Prior to those roles, he spent six years with Swarovski in Switzerland where he took on roles of increasing responsibility including director global product portfolio management and pricing strategy.

Baker discussed his experience and his new role commenting, “I’m used to working with business partners all over the world, bringing brands to new markets, employing international expansion strategies and innovative new routes to market through distribution models, joint venture or outsourced distribution and hybrid models.”

Baker continued, “My role is about helping people add scale, and driving scale through innovations like the ChiroKlip and taking it global.”

Baker also discussed his priorities for the coming months. Baker stated, “The immediate priority for the next six months on the Osteotec side are building the foundations for scale so that we can manage exponential growth without compromising our focus on excellent customer service.”

Founded by Matt Woods, Ortho Consulting Group focuses on the orthopedic, spine, and medical device industry. According to its website, it is a “management consultancy that globally grows sales channels directly or indirectly for SMEs [small and medium-sized enterprises] and start-up businesses within the industry.”

Founded in 1993, Osteotec distributes and manufactures orthopedic products throughout the United Kingdom. Its implants and instruments are also available globally through a network of distributors. Its products include the ChiroKlip. Per its website, the ChiroKlip is a butterfly-shaped clip that “protects the exposed end of the K-wire.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
