Greg Berlet, M.D., a founding partner of the Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Center in Columbus, Ohio, is the new Chief Medical Officer at Atlanta, Georgia-based MedShape, Inc.

Dr. Berlet’s 22 years of experience as a foot and ankle fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon will bring much to the table as he facilitates the development of new clinically focused initiatives. He will foster peer-to-peer surgeon training programs, patient-specific dynamic fusion products, and clinical research focused on better understanding the bone healing response to dynamic fixation.

A respected leader in the foot and ankle arena, Dr. Berlet routinely lectures at national and international meetings and serves as chair on several foot and ankle society education boards. An avid researcher, Dr. Berlet has written over 150 publications and participated as a design surgeon on many orthopedic implants.

“We are pleased to formally welcome Dr. Berlet to the MedShape team,” stated Kurt Jacobus, Chief Executive Officer of MedShape, Inc. “His passion for research and innovation coupled with his astute understanding of the dynamic interactions of biology and technology in bone healing directly align with the company’s own mission.”

According to the company, “The appointment of a Chief Medical Officer represents a pivotal milestone in the company’s evolution as industry leaders in active, adaptive healing solutions using its proprietary nickel titanium (NiTiNOL) technology. The company’s product portfolio includes the DynaNail TTC Fusion System and the latest version, the DynaNail Mini Fusion System for subtalar and medial column midfoot fusions procedures. MedShape’s products and adaptive material platform technologies are also supported by extensive research including 71 peer-reviewed publications and over 20 patents.”

Dr. Berlet told OTW, “I look forward to quickly diving in with MedShape’s Product Development Team to create a new platform of patient-specific dynamic compression devices. We are also actively working on an interactive surgeon-focused medical training program aimed at educating on how to apply active, adapting healing approaches to foot and ankle to provide better patient outcomes. MedShape has always been at the forefront of orthopedic surgical advancements and in the coming years, I expect the industry will see several more innovations from our team.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
