Ivan Tornos Now Chief Operating Officer at Zimmer Biomet

Ivan Tornos, group president of Global Businesses and the Americas at Warsaw, Indiana-based Zimmer Biomet, has been named as the company’s Chief Operating Officer (COO)—a newly-created position. Tornos, who joined Zimmer Biomet in November 2018 as Group President, Orthopedics, became Group President, Global Businesses and the Americas just one year later.

According to the press release Tornos, who “…will continue to report directly to Bryan Hanson, President and CEO, and will be responsible for overseeing all global businesses at Zimmer Biomet, as well as leading the global operations, clinical and medical education and global R&D and New Product Development functions. His responsibilities now extend beyond the Americas region, as he will now have oversight of the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region, with the President of EMEA reporting directly to him.”

“Prior to his time at Zimmer Biomet, Tornos served as Worldwide President of the Global Urology, Medical and Critical Care Division of Becton, Dickinson and Company.” Before that, Tornos held several positions with C.R. Bard, one of which was President, Europe, Middle East and Africa Regions. His career prior to C.R. Bard involved serving as Vice President and General Manager of the Americas Pharmaceutical and Medical/Imaging segments of Covidien International. He also held the position of International Vice President, Business Development and Strategy with Baxter International Inc., and before that Tornos “spent over a decade in international leadership with Johnson & Johnson.”

Ivan Tornos graduated from Harvard Business School and completed leadership and management programs at the Cox School of Business of Southern Methodist University. “He finalized post-MBA work at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, holds an MBA from the University of Miami School of Business and a BBA in Finance and International Marketing and Management from the University of Georgia Terry College of Business.”

We asked Mr. Tornos what he anticipates will be the most exciting aspect of this expanded role: “In this newly-created role, I will continue to drive our global business forward and will take further steps to integrate all aspects as we innovate and execute on our mission to alleviate pain and improve the quality of life for people around the world. We already have strong leaders in place for all key functions, and I’m proud to work alongside them to further integrate activities, from global operations to clinical and medical education to global research and development and new product development.”
