Spire Orthopedic Partners, a newly formed orthopedic and spine practice management company, is already expanding amid its debut.

Spire is a national partnership of orthopedic practices with 50 physicians and 450 employees across 10 locations. It “provides the support, capital and operational resources physicians need to grow thriving practices for the future.” Currently, its solutions range from “capital investments, financial management services and enhanced payment models, to new technology and ancillary development.”

The practice management company, which includes Connecticut-based Orthopaedic & Neurosurgery Specialists (ONS) and Orthopedic Associates of Middletown, is a capital partner with Kohlberg & Company LLC, a New York-based private equity firm. For OTW’s initial coverage of how ONS and Orthopedic Associates of Middletown joined forces, see “ONS Partners With Orthopedic Associates of Middletown.”

Focused on growth, Spire has already formed a new partnership with New York-based Orthopaedic Associates of Manhasset. Founded in 1971, Orthopaedic Associates of Manhasset is a multi-specialty orthopedic practice. It serves more than 90,000 patients annually from its two locations in New York City and Long Island. According to the press release, the practice boasts “13 board-certified, specialty-trained orthopedic surgeons and two board-certified physiatrists.”

OTW spoke with Spire Chief Growth Officer Chris Fusco about the new company and its partnership. Fusco told OTW, “We are excited about the opportunity to partner with best-in-class orthopedic and spine surgeons and build a national platform during such a dynamic time of change and transformation in healthcare.”

Fusco continued, “Our founding practices bring long-standing legacies of clinical excellence, physician collegiality and a highly personalized patient experience to the communities we serve. Now more than ever, we believe the time is right to combine our strengths in a way that creates a positive impact on the delivery of care and creates value for our physician partners.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
