On March 24, 2021 the orthopedic world experienced what may well be the start of a tectonic shift in the relationship between hospital and orthopedic supplier, with the opening of the world’s first design and 3D printing facility for complex custom orthopedic implants on hospital grounds.

In a pioneering partnership between Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York and LimaCorporate, headquartered in San Daniele del Friuli, Italy, LimaCorporate’s engineers are teaming up with HSS surgeons and engineers to use the company’s advanced technology, design and 3D printing experience to solve complex orthopedic problems.

The result? The ProMade PoC (point of care) Center for Complex Orthopedic Solutions at HSS. At the forefront of the partnership is LimCorporate’s dedicated engineering design service—ProMade.

Having the talents of both visionary entities under one roof will create more accessible and personalized care for patients. Armed with over 14 years of clinical experience in 3D printing, LimaCorporate is well positioned to team up with HSS experts to solve even the most difficult orthopedic issues. HSS surgeons and engineers will work with LimaCorporate’s engineers to best utilize the Italian company’s patented, proven trabecular titanium technology.

HSS President and CEO Louis Shapiro told OTW, “The opening of the ProMade PoC Center marks the latest milestone in our larger mission to advance the field of musculoskeletal medicine, as this first-of-its-kind partnership will provide unprecedented access to those in need of custom joint replacement solutions. We see tremendous potential for industry-wide innovations stemming from continued research and partnership between LimaCorporate and HSS. We are proud to empower surgeons at HSS—and across the globe—with the latest technology.”

LimaCorporate CEO Luigi Ferrari commented to OTW, “We are proud to be the first company to bring 3D printing of implants directly to a hospital organization, where the collaboration between top ranked surgeons and engineers can drive innovation and easier access to patients in the U.S. This is what defines LimaCorporate. A company that has in the past, and will continue in the future, strive to restore the eMotion of Motion in patients and transform orthopedics by challenging the status quo.”

With you bring together talented people with complementary skillsets, the sky is the limit. So going forward, we’ll be looking up.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
