Cedarhurst, New York-based South Island Orthopedics has welcomed David H. Godfried, M.D., F.A.A.O.S., F.A.A.P. to its orthopedic specialty practice.
Dr. David Godfried Joins NY-Based South Island Orthopedics

Dr. Godfried has served pediatric patients in Nassau County for nearly 20 years. In his most recent role, he served as director of the Center for Children and the Ignacio Ponseti Clubfoot Center at the NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital and Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital. By joining South Island Orthopedics, he expands its offerings to include pediatric orthopedics.
South Island Orthopedics has been in practice for more than 50 years. It offers general orthopedics, orthopedic surgery, sports medicine, and (now) pediatric orthopedics. South Island Orthopedics “serves the ‘Five Towns’ area of Long Island, as well as Rockaway, Long Beach and portions of Queens.”
OTW spoke with Dr. Godfried about joining South Island Orthopedics: “South Island Orthopedics has offered an opportunity to work with a group of outstanding orthopaedists and support staff in a community-based setting.”
Dr. Godfried continued, “The scale of the practice allows for a personalized team approach to specialty care that is responsive to both the needs of patients and referring providers in a way that legacy hospitals struggle to pull off.”
South Island Orthopedics Managing Partner Eric Freeman, M.D. expressed excitement about Dr. Godfried joining the team. “When the opportunity arose, we were thrilled to join forces and welcome him [Dr. Godfried] to our team. This addition will further expand South Island Orthopedics’ ability to offer state-of-the-art orthopedic care for young patients.”
Health Plus Management, a practice management service, manages South Island Orthopedics. Health Plus Management provides financial support, marketing, operations, and technology services. These services enable “physicians a customized approach to grow their practices by focusing on clinical care.”
Dr. Godfried discussed South Island Orthopedics and Health Plus Management with OTW, commenting “The future of specialty orthopaedic care will be increasingly tied to value, access and patients experience. With their emphasis on quality and safety, South Island Orthopedics and Health Plus Management are committed to providing their physicians and staff with the support and tools needed to provide these services for patients within their communities.”

Discussion
This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?
Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.
We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
