University Orthopedics, headquartered in East Providence, Rhode Island, is establishing a Massachusetts beachhead in Mansfield, Massachusetts, on February 1, 2021.

“University Orthopedics is pleased we’re able to bring the same high-quality orthopedic care for which we’re known to the residents of Massachusetts,” said Edward Akelman, M.D., president of University Orthopedics. “Patients will no longer have to drive into Boston or Rhode Island to receive world-class care. It will be available just a short distance from their homes.”

Mansfield patients can avail themselves of the following:

  • Physical Therapy
  • Hand Therapy
  • Sports Medicine
  • Pediatric Orthopedics
  • Back and Neck
  • Hip and Knee
  • Shoulder and Elbow
  • Foot and Ankle
  • Spine
  • Interventional Pain Management

According to Dr. Akelman, the reason University Orthopedics is expanding into Massachusetts is that “University Orthopedics has had an increase in patients from the Mansfield area traveling to Rhode Island for care. The Mansfield site is opening to provide easier access for patients in this geographic area.”

And what will the upcoming months bring?

“As the office opens,” said Dr. Akelman to OTW, “we will be providing full time musculoskeletal care coverage by Dr. Andrew Chen. Orthopedic subspecialists will be setting up specific times to see patients including physical therapy and hand therapy services.”

The Mansfield facility will also be home to one of University Orthopedics’ urgent care facilities—OrthoDirect—and will provide next- and same-day access to acute orthopedic care for the treatment of new, non-emergent musculoskeletal injuries including sprains, strains, and possible fractures.

University Orthopedics’ specialists are faculty members of the Department of Orthopaedics at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University who instruct medical students, orthopedic residents, and fellowship surgeons.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
