Life Spine, Inc., based in Huntley, Illinois, has announced that it has sold over 20,000 units of its ProLift Expandable System, a spine product that includes Osseo-Loc Surface Technology.

“Expandable technology is on track to make up almost half of the domestic interbody market in the next five years and we pride ourselves on having some of the oldest and broadest intellectual property encapsulating expandable spine technology,” said Michael Butler, company president and CEO. “The rapid adoption of our Micro Invasive expandable portfolio is a direct result of our commitment to constantly innovate and create products designed to optimize spine surgery.”

“The ProLift Expandable Interbody is my preferred lumbar interbody for myriad reasons,” said Dr. Hajeer Sabet of Woodbridge, Virginia. “The implant can achieve up to 6mm of expansion, is self-locking at any height and can be post-packed in situ. Additionally, it is available in a large number of footprints to accommodate varying patient anatomies and features a proprietary surface technology.”

Starting Point: MICRO Invasive

Butler told OTW, “The development of the ProLift system relied strongly on our focus of delivering a Micro Invasive technique that is extremely reproducible, reliable and expeditious. We have documented reducing our average micro invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion to just 45 minutes which is ideal for an ambulatory surgical center setting.”

“As it stands, we currently have 50(+) patents around expandable technology. We are actively engaged in another 10 expandable projects currently, all designed to reduce procedural time and positively impact outcomes.”

A privately held company, Life Spine currently works in 32 countries, has over 350 patent positions and 200+ issued patents.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
