Philadelphia-based Premier Orthopedics and Philadelphia Hand to Shoulder Center have opened the $6.7 million King of Prussia Surgery Center.

Minority partners in the surgery center include West Reading-based Tower Health and Delaware County-based Crozer-Keystone Health System.

The King of Prussia Surgery Center is a 14,500-square-foot surgery center. It includes four operating rooms and 14 additional rooms for use before and after surgery. Its “high-tech ventilation system” was designed to shield against airborne illness including COVID-19.

Its staff includes the following 20 orthopedic surgeons from different medical groups: Randall W. Culp, M.D.; Linda D’Andrea, M.D.; Thomas Gillon, M.D.; James T. Guille, M.D.; Sidney Jacoby, M.D.; Leonid I. Katolik, M.D.; Kenneth Kearns, M.D.; Glenn Lipton, M.D.; Praveen Murthy, M.D.; A. Lee Osterman, M.D.; Meredith Osterman, M.D.; Nikos Pavlides, M.D.; Mark Rekant, M.D.; Scott Ritterman, M.D.; Adam B. Strohl, M.D.; Stephanie Sweet, M.D.; Richard Tosti, M.D.; Matthew Wilson, M.D.; David S. Zelouf, M.D.; and Dan Zlotolow, M.D. The surgery center also has three staff members on its anesthesia team: William Isaacson, M.D.; William Goldstein, M.D.; and David Heyman, D.O.

Dr. Jacoby, an orthopedic surgeon focused on hands, wrists, arms, and elbows, discussed the facility in an interview. Dr. Jacoby said, “Other surgery centers have to cater to different types of surgery…We cater only to ourselves and the needs of our orthopedic patients.”

The center’s outpatient surgical services include the following: hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip, knee, spine, sports medicine, total joint replacements, trauma care, fracture care, microsurgery, minimally-invasive procedures, arthroscopic procedures, and pain management. The center had a soft opening this summer and expects to perform at least 4,200 surgeries next year.

The King of Prussia Surgery Center has established safety procedures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The center has masking requirements for patients, physicians, and staff. It also requires that all of its patients test negative for COVID-19 prior to surgery.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
