Former President of Brighton Health Network, Rondi Rabuse, has agreed to join Greenwich, Connecticut-based Orthopaedic & Neurosurgery Specialists (ONS) as its first Chief Value Officer (CVO).

The logical first question is, what does a Chief Value Officer do? According to ONS, CVO Rabuse will play a central role in ONS’ ongoing expansion. ONS, which is based in Connecticut, also maintain offices in New York. Rabuse will also nurture payer relationships and provide financial contract analysis of acquisitions.

Rabuse comes to ONS with over two decades of experience in payer and provider relationships. Most recently, she served as president of Brighton Health Network. In that role, she supervised the creation and operation of network models. Previously, she served as senior vice president at Marwood Group, a healthcare focused advisory firm. She also served in senior vice president roles at Aetna.

Rabuse discussed the new position with OTW. “ONS stands out among orthopedic and neurosurgery providers because of our ability to deliver on both quality and cost throughout the continuum of care in meaningful and measurable ways. We are ahead of the value-based care curve and we are growing because of it.”

Rabuse continued, “My solid understanding of the payer market will only increase ONS’ ability to communicate the value we create for patients, payers and physicians, and I’m looking forward to being in a position to help strengthen each of those essential relationships that define the ongoing success of our unique and expanding model.”

The CVO’s knowledge of the payer market is not the only reason she is eager to join the ONS team. Prior to joining ONS, Rabuse visited ONS for relief from a knee injury. In the press release, Rabuse explained that ONS was the only place where she could find relief after failed attempts from other providers. Her ONS patient experience contributed to her professional desire to join the organization.

Rabuse stated, “My experience as an ONS patient lined up with my professional goals to seek the best outcome through collaboration, and when I ended up exploring a professional opportunity with ONS, it gave me a substantive understanding of what kind of organization I’d be joining.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
