Medacta USA and the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) are celebrating five years of partnership with the launch of the annual Medacta Challenge, a campaign asking that residents and fellows participate in charitable giving at an early stage in their careers and consider OREF as a beneficiary of their philanthropy.

According to OREF, “To date, Medacta USA has helped raise more than $500,000 in support for OREF research through the Medacta Challenge, direct funding for OREF research, and personal contributions from Medacta USA leadership. Residents and fellows interested in participating in the Medacta Challenge can visit http://www.oref.org/residents for more information.”

Commenting on the longevity of the partnership between Medacta and OREF, Medacta USA President Eric Dremel noted that, “one of Medacta’s core values is medical education. Our founder, Alberto Siccardi, believes there is an opportunity in the marketplace to help prevent complications and improve the patient experience through enhanced education. A lot of those efforts, not surprisingly, are directed toward residents and fellows. The concept of matching their gifts to OREF through the Medacta Challenge aligned very well with that core value and it remains an important part of Medacta’s philanthropic activities.”

“The partnership with Medacta has been an extraordinary one for OREF, and we are grateful not only for their continued financial support, which has been tremendous, but perhaps more importantly, for Medacta’s commitment to OREF and the blueprint it has provided to other industry partners who understand the value of research and the benefit of partnering with OREF,” said Richard F. Kyle, M.D., OREF president.

“Opportunities to foster orthopaedic research and to engage more residents in research are vital,” said Eric Dremel to OTW. “Advancing innovative surgical solutions supported with exceptional medical education are core values at Medacta. Such efforts must be with research that validates clinical practices that improve patient satisfaction while reducing the cost of orthopedic care and recovery. Medacta is pleased with the success of our partnership with OREF in support of its mission to fund outstanding research and mentor researchers to improve lives of patients with musculoskeletal conditions.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
