Salt Lake City, Utah-based Total Joint Orthopedics, Inc. (TJO) is partnering with Fremont, California-based THINK Surgical®, Inc. to bring a new technical solution to the knee surgery space.

The companies announced that THINK Surgical will develop software that TJO’s Klassic® Knee System to be implanted using THINK’s TSolution One® Total Knee Application. The companies plan to co-market the solution upon receival of 510(k) clearance to use the Klassic Knee System with the TSolution One Total Knee Application.

TJO CEO Erin Hofmann spoke with OTW about the partnership. Hofmann told OTW, “We are excited about the TJO-THINK partnership as this expands our Evolution of Technology offerings for surgeons seeking a technological solution for total joint replacement.”

TJO focuses on improving operating room efficiency. Introduced in 2013, the Klassic Knee System utilizes a “modern, universal knee design” to restore “natural kinematic function.” With TJO’s instrumentation, the Klassic Knee only utilizes one tray in 90% of cases.

THINK Surgical CEO Jay Yang also discussed the partnership. “THINK Surgical looks forward to the addition of TJO’s Klassic Knee System to our open implant library, providing surgeons another choice in the treatment of patients with end-stage knee arthritis.”

Yang continued, “Much like the advanced technology offered by TJO, THINK Surgical’s TSolution One Total Knee Application, which features an active robot, is taking orthopedic surgery further in providing consistency and dimensional accuracy in total joint replacement procedures.”

The TSolution One Total Knee Application unites two total joint replacement inventions, TPLAN® and TCAT®. TPLAN is a pre-surgical planning workstation. It allows the surgeon to virtually create the patient’s joint replacement plan. TCAT is an active robot that aids the surgeon in performing the preoperative plan.

Looking forward, TJO is excited for 2021. Erin Hofmann told OTW, “2021 will be big year for TJO with a number of exciting product introductions in both the knee and hip space along with the ability to robotically implant TJO’s proven Klassic Knee.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
