Valley View Hospital is adding two orthopedic surgeons to its team at its new ValleyOrtho location in Aspen, Colorado.

Based in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, Valley View is a nonprofit health organization. ValleyOrtho is part of Valley View and currently serves patients from its three locations in the Roaring Fork Valley. The newest ValleyOrtho location in downtown Aspen is expected to open in late fall 2020.

Orthopedic surgeons Tomas Pevny, M.D. and Mark Purnell, M.D. have joined the ValleyOrtho orthopedics team. The orthopedic surgeons have served their Colorado community for a combined 50 years. They will begin seeing ValleyOrtho patients at the new Aspen office in December 2020

Dr. Pevny is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon. He completed the Rocky Mountain Sports Medicine Fellowship and launched total joint replacement surgery at Aspen Valley Hospital.

Dr. Pevny shared his excitement with OTW, “I am thrilled to join the ValleyOrtho group at its new downtown Aspen office.”

Dr. Pevny continued, “The leadership at Valley View Hospital and its commitment to trusted, community-minded care is admirable, and all of us at the clinic are wholly dedicated to providing our patients and the Aspen community with the care that they deserve.”

Dr. Purnell is also a board-certified orthopedic surgeon. He completed a fellowship with the Aspen Sports Medicine Foundation and has published research on knee reconstruction.

“It is an honor to be a part of the team at the new downtown Aspen ValleyOrtho office,” Dr. Purnell remarked to OTW. “Since 1985, I have been proud to serve patients in my hometown of Aspen, and I look forward to continuing to provide them with the world-class care they deserve.”

OTW spoke with Valley View leadership about the new clinic and new orthopedic team members. Valley View CEO Brian Murphy, M.D. told OTW, “We are excited to open our new ValleyOrtho clinic in downtown Aspen, and welcome locally renowned surgeons Dr. Purnell and Dr. Pevny to our team. For decades, both have provided exceptional care to Roaring Fork Valley residents.”

Dr. Murphy continued, “Their blend of medical mastery and compassion is a great fit for ValleyOrtho’s commitment to care for everyone. Now, these residents can see their surgeons―whom they know and trust―in this convenient Aspen location.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
