U.S. News & World Report has ranked the Chicago, Illinois, Orthopedic Program at Rush University Medical Center as the 5th best in the nation for 2020. The program was also selected as the best in Illinois and Indiana. The doctors who operate the highly ranked program are employed by Midwest Orthopedics at Rush (MOR) and also provide services to local sporting teams, such as the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bulls, and the Chicago Fire Soccer Club.

Brian Cole, M.D., Managing Partner at MOR, was pleased with the recognition, saying, “We appreciate the acknowledgement of our hard work and dedication to achieving the best outcomes for our patients who seek care for their musculoskeletal and spine conditions locally, nationally and internationally…we are honored that our exceptional, research-based orthopedic department continues to be recognized nationwide by our colleagues and peers.”

Rush’s recent standing among national orthopedic programs has been a point of pride for the organization. They moved up from a 7th place ranking in 2019, but have been ranked as high as 4th as recently as 2018. The current list features Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), Mayo Clinic, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital in the top 4 slots for 2020-2021. Only HSS achieved a perfect score in the ranking, which assesses outcomes and experience, programs, services, and staff, professional recognition, and applicable procedures. Rush received a rating of good or better in all categories.

Eligibility for the recognition includes treatment of at least 278 Medicare inpatients in 2016, 2017, and 2018. Over 1,600 hospital orthopedic programs are considered for the award. Rush University Medical Center, CEO and President Omar Lateef, D.O. has said in the past of the rankings, “What doesn’t change is that Rush University Medical Center provides exceptional care that produces outstanding results for our patients…I thank our exceptional physicians, nurses, other care providers and colleagues in numerous other areas for all they do to deliver this very high level of compassionate care to our patients and their families.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
