Eren Kuris, M.D. spent most of his training at the Brown University-associated University Orthopedics, Inc. (UOI). He completed his orthopedic surgery residency and an orthopedic trauma fellowship at the Providence, Rhode Island-based Brown University’s Warren Alpert School of Medicine.

He also serves as an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics at the medical school. So, it is no surprise that after completing a one-year fellowship in spine surgery at the University of Colorado that he is being welcomed back to Rhode Island with open arms.

President of University Orthopedics Edward Akelman, M.D. said in a press release from the practice, “We know first-hand the caliber of clinician we are getting in Dr. Kuris and are thrilled he has decided to bring his knowledge and experience back to UOI. Just like all of the clinicians in our practice, Dr. Kuris is committed to a higher-level of patient care. His dedication to enhanced patient outcomes will make him a valued member of our team.” Current Chief of Spine Surgery Alan Daniels, M.D. hinted at the hiring during an early-June interview with OTW.

Kuris, excited about his August 24 return, said in a press release, “I am thrilled to be returning to Rhode Island and UOI and look forward to having a positive impact on my patients’ quality of life.” Kuris attended Tulane University for both his undergraduate studies and medical degree. He is a member of several professional societies, such as the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the North American Spine Society (NASS), and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA). He serves on both the SpinePAC and Politifcal Engagement Committee for NASS, and is the editor of the spine section for the fifth edition of the OTA’s Core Curriculum. He will work from UOI’s Kettle Point location in East Providence.

University Orthopedics, Inc. employs over 40 physicians to provide orthopedic, musculoskeletal, and sports medicine care to the Providence, Rhode Island area.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
