The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) recently announced that Jesse C. DeLee, M.D, a renowned orthopedic surgeon in Texas, will be inducted into its Hall of Fame on Friday, July 21, 2020 during the Society’s Annual Meeting in Toronto, Canada.
Texas Surgeon DeLee To Be Inducted Into AOSSM Hall of Fame

AOSSM Hall of Famers are chosen for their significant contributions to the sports medicine field. DeLee has authored over 50 peer reviewed articles and has contributed to 17 textbook chapters. He also served on the first AOSSM Examination Committee which wrote the original Fellow Examination in 1994.
Currently DeLee has an orthopedic sports medicine practice in San Antonio where he serves as a team physician for several area high schools and colleges. He is a 1970 graduate of the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He went on to complete an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1975 and completed a fellowship in joint reconstructive surgery with Sir John Charnley in Wrightington, England.
He was a full-time faculty member at the University of Texas Health San Antonio from 1978 to 1983. And in 1988, he founded the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited orthopedic sports medicine fellowship there.
DeLee also founded the Nix Hospital Sports Medicine Clinic, which provides comprehensive sports medicine care for inner-city athletes in San Antonio and South Texas, in 1983. And established the DeLee-Evans Foundation for Sports Medicine with his associate Dr. John Evans.
He has also contributed to the field of sports medicine through many memberships and activities including:
- Reviewer, The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, The American Journal of Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy
- Coeditor, Operative Techniques in Sports Medicine (1992-2012)
- Member, Board of Trustees of The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (1999-2006)
- Member/Committee Member, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Orthopedic Association, AOSSM, The Knee Society, American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society, Herodicus Society
- Founding member, Arthroscopy Association of North America
- Chair, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Annual Symposium on Sports Medicine
- Chair, University Interscholastic League Medical Advisory Committee, responsible for oversight of all medical aspects of high school athletes in Texas
DeLee has three daughters and eight grandchildren.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?
Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.
We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
