Nexxt Spine LLC, headquartered in Noblesville, Indiana, is strengthening its West Coast position with the addition of two spine arena veterans and a clinical specialist.

Mariah Woods, Ph.D., the new vice president of Sales West, brings over 18 years of leadership experience within the spine and biotechnology industries. She has been recognized as the top performer in distribution for Therics and Theken Spine.

According to Nexxt Spine, “After 7 years in distribution, Mariah was recruited by an innovative biotech start-up Axial Biotech as their Clinical Sales Manager. Next, Mariah joined the silicon nitride pioneer Amedica, a spinal hardware company known for its introduction of a ceramic-based bioactive implant.”

“She spent 4.5 successful years with Amedica where she was recognized as the top performing Regional Manager 4 years in a row, taking her region from $0 to over $8.5M. Mariah spent the following 4 years with a biotechnology company Burst Biologics where she helped develop and expand their biologics portfolio. She was successful in her time at Burst and decided to take her expertise and knowledge back into the spinal hardware space with Camber Spine, which she spent 2 years growing the west coast.”

Mariah Woods commented to OTW, As I take in Nexxt Spine’s values and goals a company, I plan to build a dynamic sales team that fosters a team environment, understands the team’s challenges and work with them to achieve success. I hope to lead by example and encourage our new sales team to aim for the stars!”

“Dynamic sales team are not built overnight. It takes a little bit ‘extra’ to go from ordinary to extraordinary. I am always willing to put in that little bit extra when it comes to time, commitment, persistence and success.”

Aaron Jennings, M.B.A., the new regional manager Mountain Region, has 13 years of spine experience in a variety of spine hardware and biologics. As stated by Nexxt Spine, “His career began as a sales associate with Globus Medical. After 3 successful years with Globus Medical, Aaron ran an award-winning distributorship selling spine hardware and biologics. Aaron then worked in a management role spending 3 years with Burst Biologics as the RSM [Regional Sales Manager] in Southern California.”

Aaron Jennings told OTW, “My first steps would be to contact my existing network to educate them on our product line, especially the science behind Matrixx, our 3D printed porous titanium line. Nexxt Spine has numerous hospital approvals so I would also discuss with my network the approvals that are relevant to them.”

“I’m a big relationship guy. I enjoy working with distributors I know and trust. I also enjoy getting to know new distributors and building a relationship. I am very reliable, and my distributors can count on me for anything.”

Jaime Jacobs, the new clinical specialist, “…graduated in May 2019 with an Environmental Engineering degree from the University of Vermont. During her undergraduate studies, she worked in the Engineered Biomaterials Research Laboratory for two and a half years. Jaime co-authored a paper which focused on the creation of a polymer scaffold that would grow cartilage for the replacement of the meniscus. An abstract of this project was submitted to The World Biomaterials Congress. Jaime is also a graduate from Medical Sales College with a focus in Spine, Orthopedic Reconstruction and Trauma.”

Jaime Jacobs told OTW, “As I move forward in this role, I’ve been spending time with distributors and surgeons in the operating room as well as familiarizing myself with Nexxt Spine technologies and their options. I bring a strong amount of tenacity to this role.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
