SI-BONE Partners to Create 3D-Printed Implants

PrinterPrezz, Inc., a Fremont, California-based designer and manufacturer of 3D-printed medical devices, has announced a customer agreement with SI-BONE, Inc., a medical device company headquartered in Santa Clara, California.

SI-BONE pioneered minimally invasive surgical treatments of the sacroiliac joint with its iFuse Implant System. Since the introduction of iFuse in 2009, it has been used in more than 34,000 procedures that have been performed by over 1,700 surgeons around the world.

As part of the partnership, PrinterPrezz will provide SI-BONE with development and build services for future 3D-printed advanced medical devices and implants.

Shri Shetty, CEO of PrinterPrezz, said, “SI-BONE is at the forefront of providing minimally invasive surgical products for the sacroiliac joint, seeking to help patients around the world who are suffering from low back pain caused by SI joint dysfunction. We’re working closely with SI-BONE to accelerate ground-breaking development of high-performance devices to meet the demands of this large and underserved market. Leveraging our multidisciplinary team of clinicians and engineers as well as our suite of 3D printers, 3D manipulation software, and 3D scanners, PrinterPrezz helps customers bring life-changing orthopedic devices to market faster.”

Scott Yerby, chief technology officer of SI-BONE, said, “Our surgeons are asking for more metal 3D-printed medical solutions to help their patients, and we continue to push forward our R&D to deliver solutions for those who can benefit from surgical treatment of SI joint disorders…. Working with PrinterPrezz’s local Bay Area Innovation Center enables extremely fast turnarounds for our engineering team. This allows us to test prototypes more quickly and iterate using 3D-printed models in pursuit of better patient outcomes.”

Teresa Thuruthiyil, chief strategy officer for PrinterPrezz, told OTW, “At PrinterPrezz, we are focused on helping to bring more medical devices to market faster. Having easy access to 3D printing development and build services, in a variety of materials including Ti6A14V-ELI, results in being able to speed development from prototyping to volume manufacturing.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
