Rochester, New York-based medical imaging and IT company, Carestream Health, has announced that it was awarded 42 U.S. patents by from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in 2018. The patents were awarded in the areas of digital radiology, extremity CT imaging, and other healthcare technology areas. The company also received 37 patents in European and Asian countries last year.

“We have had global success in providing radiology and healthcare IT systems to help medical professionals provide quality care and enhance their operations. Our patents represent the continuous innovation that drives our new product pipeline and illustrates the depth of talent of our technical team,” Gene Shkurko, IP Counsel for Carestream told OTW.

The new patents include medical image capture technologies related to the development of computed tomography (CT) systems designed for extremity exams and technology advancements that enhance the image quality delivered by Carestream’s radiology imaging systems and detectors.

“These valuable patents demonstrate our continued success in developing advanced diagnostic imaging technologies that serve healthcare providers around the world,” said Susan Parulski, Carestream’s Chief Patent Counsel. “Our employees are committed to delivering new products that can enhance image quality, deliver greater productivity and offer new capabilities to help improve the quality of patient care.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
