BoneSmart, headquartered in Solana Beach, California, and Maxx Orthopedics, Inc., based in Norristown, Pennsylvania, have joined forces to provide surgeons with information regarding the Freedom Knee platform, as well as in-depth knee replacement surgery educational content.

According to BoneSmart CEO Mark Sacaris,“Maxx is bringing education and information around their Freedom Knee System to our community. We also connect surgeons that use the Freedom Knee system to our patients. Our online content helps patients understand the details of their procedure from the time of diagnosis through the recovery process.”

“BoneSmart is unique in its ability to provide real-time assistance to joint replacement patients—with an emphasis on the nurturing aspect that patients need. We have a team of healthcare professionals at the ready to answer patients’ questions as they go through the entire journey of joint replacement. Every other entity is only engaging them for the episode of care, but we are there at the beginning and then even after they are home. We free up surgeons’ time by filling in the blanks or just providing a reminder for patients.”

BoneSmart is an independent educational platform and online community of patients, implant manufacturers and physicians. The company has, reportedly, more than 28,000community members with over 2.5 million unique users that visit this site. The website, BoneSmart.org, provides members with information about joint replacement and the orthopaedic surgeons that perform them.

Maxx Orthopedics is a Pennsylvania-based supplier of orthopedic implants and instruments. “Maxx Orthopedics is excited about this collaboration, which brings together our Freedom Knee System and surgeons to BoneSmart’s robust patient community,” said Ashesh Shah, CEO.

According to BoneSmart CEO Sacaris, “The collaboration came to fruition because of the value that BoneSmart brings to the orthopaedic implant companies like Maxx that want to educate patients on the value of joint replacement and how a product like the Freedom can help them on their journey.”

“BoneSmart is the only comprehensive joint replacement digital platform (web/mobile app) dedicated to nurturing the patient that needs a joint replacement by abating their fear and dispelling any confusion they may have.”

“We are the educational bridge between time-crunched clinicians and their patientswho crave information. Our efforts help people understand their diagnosis and what to expect from their surgery. We detail their options when they are not sure what to do, and we walk them through the entire pre and post op process.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
