Scott Gibson,D.O., a specialist in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the shoulder, has joined Flagstaff-based Northern Arizona Orthopaedics (NAO), which is managed by Healthcare Outcomes Performance Company (HOPCo) in the Flagstaff, Sedona, Verde Valley and Prescott.

“We are excited to expand our team of specialized surgeons and bring top notch care to Flagstaff, Prescott Valley and Sedona. Our expansion represents the dedication we have to the communities in which we serve who share a vision in delivering best-in-class orthopedic care,” says Carl DeRosa, Ph.D., CEO of Northern ArizonaOrthopaedics. “Their kindness, skill and dedication to caring for the needs of our communities, is unmistakably valuable in healthcare today.”

Dr. Gibson completed his fellowship training in shoulder and elbow surgery at The CORE Institute in Phoenix. He undertook his residency training from Oklahoma State University and obtained his medical degree from Midwestern University.

Dr. Gibson commented to OTW, “I plan to represent the leadership Northern Arizona Orthopaedics is known for, and honor the goal of providing high-quality, subspecialized care for the growing community.”

Dr. DeRosa told OTW, “Dr. Scott Gibson brings experience and wisdom to the physician team at Northern Arizona Orthopaedics. He enhances our best in class orthopedics and sports medicine team and improves our ability to serve all of northern Arizona.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
